Prison Rape Elimination Act: PREA
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) became law on September 3, 2003. As part of PREA, the National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Sexual Abuse of Inmates were established by Federal Rule and became effective on August 20, 2012. The National Standards provide a framework for best correctional practices in the prevention of sexual abuse of inmates in confinement. It covers understanding PREA, staff roles and responsibilities, identifying signs of potential sexual abuse, responding to and investigating incidents of sexual abuse of inmates. This 3-course package awards 6.25 contact hours.
