Community Supervision of Impaired Drivers

Most agencies rely on evidence-based practices to monitor people sentenced to community supervision, but people who drive while impaired are a unique population of offenders. Most score low risk, even though about 30% of them will become repeat offenders (Linn et al., 2016). So, what strategies can officers use to supervise this population of offenders, whether they have a specialized caseload of people convicted of driving while impaired (DWI) or supervise them as part of a general supervision caseload? This course will explore strategies officers might use to compliment the evidence-based strategies required by their agency. The goal of this course is to help community supervision officers working with adult DWI offenders understand the challenges associated with monitoring this offender population and supervision strategies to compliment evidence-based practices and improve offender outcomes.
